So I’ve started writing Book 6, ‘Call to War’. I thought this might be the last book. In fact, I mapped out the story and then I slept on it for a few days and it just wasn’t right. It might sound weird, but it was too easy. The Devil isn’t quite done and it turns out he has more nasty tricks in his kit bag. Some days that guy really surprises me and he did this time too.
This is my first series and it’s been quite the learning curve in so many ways. One of the most incredible learnings is the characters have a life of their own. The books are written with a rough plot map, but I never fully adhere to it. I sit down with my laptop and look at the plot map and then start typing. I might intend for a particular character to tell the tale, but more often than not, someone else decides to talk. I might mean for certain things to happen, but I’m frequently surprised by the turn it all takes. People never do what I intend or expect them to do and I’m left wondering what’s supposed to happen next.
I don’t talk to other writers so I’ve no idea if this is normal, but it’s fun. I’ve always had a vivid and entertaining imagination, but never having written it down before I’d no idea where it would lead. Turns out, all over the damned place!
With the release of Book 5, ‘Right to Rule’, I’ve been happy to see so many people snapping it up. It means there’s more people out there like me who are addicted to finding out what happens next, because I never know either. I’m as curious as everyone else and it’s good to know I’m not alone in the world gone mad.
At the start of every book all I can see ahead of me is a long road of writing. I’ll agonise over descriptions, too much or too little? I’ll worry about the explanations, does it make sense? I’ll fret over the flow of words, is it easy to read and absorb? What I won’t worry about is the plot or characters. I don’t seem to control either. The story will unfold as much to me as it does to the you, and I along with you will be intrigued by each twist and turn.
This is the start of my long road and I hope to get this book in your hands sooner rather than later. I’ve promised a June publication, but if I’m able, it will be with you sooner than that.
Meantime, wish me happy trails.
